The Risks of Teeth Whitening

The process of teeth whitening is generally considered to be a very safe and painless procedure, which is the case for the most part. While the effects caused by the teeth whitening procedure can produce a mild amount of pain, they can be overcome by relatively simple procedures. Much of the problems that teeth whitening can cause are related to the sensitivity of the teeth after the procedures or a reaction to a bleaching procedure.

If sensitivity is felt in the teeth after the teeth whitening is done then it can be reduced by shortening the amount of time the gel applicators are worn. The applicators, generally a molding of the patient’s teeth, are worn for around an hour at a time but can be done for less to reduce the chance of sensitivity. Since the molding may take a little while to get used to it is best to gradually increase the amount of time the molding applicator is used.

It is very easy to find toothpaste at the local grocery or drug store that contains potassium nitrate which helps to soothe the nerve endings in the root of the tooth. Most dentists can prescribe or recommend a specially designed toothbrush that, when run under hot water, softens the brush and causes less friction with the teeth and gums. If you can get your dentist to give you a product with fluoride you could drastically reduce the heightened sensitivity be constantly re-mineralizing your teeth.

Most teeth whitening procedures do involve a bleach of some type which is not ideal for those who have gum disease or a history of worn or sensitive teeth. Also, women who are pregnant or individuals who have recent dental work like crowns or caps cannot have a bleaching treatment. This is why it is very important to consult with a dentist prior to any teeth whitening procedure.

The idea of teeth whitening is very attractive and can be a great lift of spirit to those with low levels of self-esteem. However, there are some risks and precautions to take before making any kind of commitment to a teeth whitening procedure so it is very important to take the necessary steps to educate yourself on the procedure.
